Cooperative Healthcare Services, Inc., a strategic affiliate of Southeast Georgia Health System, has an opportunity for a Medical Office Assistant to join our team at Hematology & Oncology team!

The Medical Office Assistant:
Provides a variety of clerical duties in support of the medical office
Greets patients, answers telephone, schedules appointments, registers patients, makes copies of insurance information, obtains treatment authorization from managed care plans and applicable government payors, verifies medical necessity prior to diagnostic testing, and assembles medical chart with all necessary forms
Checks patients out after office visits, tallies charges and collects co-pays, accurately enters charges, and provides patient with a written receipt at time of discharge
Is responsible for a variety of financial duties including balancing the daily record sheets, payment posting, adjustment posting, patient financial counseling, and the preparation and delivery of the daily bank deposit
Assists with the flow of patients by providing access to the appropriate clinical personnel based on the patient's chief complaint and presenting symptoms
Serves as a patient/family/staff liaison for the purposes of communicating information
Maintains the medical record system: establishes, retrieves and files patient records
Files medical reports, and assures appropriate distribution of pertinent patient information to referring physicians
Receives, sorts and distributes mail and posts all outgoing mail
Exhibits positive interpersonal skills (customer service) as 100% of time are spent interacting with others

The Medical Office Assistant will perform the following essential responsibilities:
Gathers the appropriate information from the patient/significant other to assure the patient is registered appropriately, necessary referrals are obtained, consents obtained, and data entered in the computer is accurate
Accurately enters patient demographic and financial data in the appropriate computer program and generates the appropriate forms for the clinicians
Maintains the medical record system to include preparation of copies for legal and other purposes
Post payments made by patients at time of service and by mail and provides patients with receipt or superbill at time of discharge
Completes end of day procedures including the daily close, balancing of cash drawer to petty cash and receipts and balancing of daily charges to superbills
Prepares and submits daily bank deposit in accordance with established procedures
Utilizes current software or hardcopy to check medical necessity according to commercial, federal and state payor requirements
Accurately tallies patient charges at time of discharge and prepares superbill
Monitors and appropriately responds to the needs of patients in the waiting area
Obtains requisite treatment authorizations from commercial, federal and state payors as required

The ideal Medical Office Assistant will possess the following minimum qualifications:
High School graduate or equivalent required
One (1) to three (3) years secretarial or clerical experience in a healthcare setting or business office
Experienced in medical terminology and medical coding
Positive interpersonal communication skills
Computer literate and able to operate a variety of office equipment including telephone, fax, copier, credit card terminal, adding machine, and typewriter
Bookkeeping experience
